Peter Cushing (1913-1994) vintage Mabel Lucie Attwell colour postcard sent by the actor to his wife Helen, handwritten in his familiar blue ink and dated 10.v.51 which reads: ‘For my dearest “Mushie”, Do hope you enjoy yourself, darling – I feel safe now. My love always, “Toadis” xx’ with a doodle of a dog bone and paw print. Cushing was a prolific writer to his wife whilst they were apart, frequently using pet names as in this case, and often sending postcards by Mabel Lucie Attwell, this one featuring to the front one of her familiar child characters, holding a doll and crying with the caption ‘Just tired I ‘spects!’. Peter Cushing was famously devoted to his wife, Violet Hélène Beck, and in later years Cushing became increasingly reclusive following her death in 1971.
